Theology 6: The Word Endures Forever

The Word Endures Forever

1 Peter 1:23-25, “For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. For, “All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.”

I stumbled upon this tidbit in the news today: The Titanic wreckage is crumbling. It will not be around in 30 years. I’m not surprised. Salt is corrosive. Do you know the oldest, still-standing structure in the world? This is what the “super-official” Wikipedia told me: Göbekli Tepe, a religious site located in Turkey that dates back to around the 8th-10th millennium BC. In any case, it’s old and it’s still around… for now.

But nothing is permanent. At some point ancient sites like the pyramids and Stonehenge won’t be around. At some point cities and buildings will crumble. Even our earth has an expiration date. Time, the ultimate corrosive material, wears down everything. Does anything last forever?

The Word of God lasts forever. The message of the Bible endures in eternity. Jesus, the Word made flesh, reigns for all time. And through this Word that is preached and read God gives us new life, forgiveness, and the promise of eternal paradise. Connected to the enduring Word, we too live forever.
