Weekly Devotion: A Mustard Seed

A Mustard Seed

Mark 4:30-32, “What shall we say the kingdom of God is like, or what parable shall we use to describe it? It is like a mustard seed, which is the smallest of all seeds on earth. Yet when planted, it grows and becomes the largest of all garden plants, with such big branches that the birds can perch in its shade.”

Have you ever seen a mustard seed? It’s a dot on your finger. It’s tiny! Have you ever seen a mustard tree? They grow not only two stories high but two stories wide. It’s huge! Their branches spread out like a canopy across a lawn, a happy home for all kinds of birds.

That’s a beautiful truth about God’s kingdom.

It seems so powerless. Words on a page? A small infant born in a barn? A God able to be captured and killed? A message of humility and repentance? People attack God’s kingdom. Others distort the message into a moral story. Many reject this message. God’s kingdom seems so tiny, like a mustard seed.

But God’s kingdom grows into a mighty tree! Through the preaching of the gospel of Jesus, through the message of forgiveness and eternal life, that tiny seed spreads over the whole world in the hearts of humankind. What seems so powerless is actually the powerful, life-giving Word of God, the message of forgiveness through Jesus. God invites you to come and sit. You have a home in those branches.
