Weekly Devotion: Out of the Storm

Out of the Storm

Job 38:1-3, “Then the LORD spoke to Job out of the storm.”

Job had every reason to be angry at God. In one day, he lost everything: His wealth, his fame, his servants, and even all ten children. Job spends most of the book of Job asking God, “Why did this happen to me?”

We all carry around a lot of anger towards God. Why did you take away my child? Why did let me get that sickness? Why did you allow that abuse to happen to me? Why, God, why does it hurt? Why did you do this?

In the book of Job, we get to hear God’s answer to our questions, to our anger. But God subverts our expectations. He flips everything around. He doesn’t give us a logical answer. The most reasonable answer in the world wouldn’t take away our pain. We might shout at God, “If you are really God, why did you allow this to happen?” But God doesn’t answer that question when Job asks it or when we ask it.

Instead, out of the storm, God speaks to us. In our sufferings, in our pain, God talks to us.

Beyond the storms of life, beyond all the pain and anger we face, God gives us hope. Forgiveness. Eternal life. Heaven.

We can reject Jesus. But the storm will still rage. Or we can look to Jesus and, even in the storm, by his power, stand with peace and joy
