Weekly Devotion: That’s God’s Job

Ezekiel 2:4-5, “The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and stubborn. Say to them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says.’ And whether they listen or fail to listen—for they are a rebellious people—they will know that a prophet has been among them.

Sometimes, we Christians can misunderstand God’s task for us. And that can cause problems.

Look at what God promises us in Ezekiel 2: Lots of people are going to reject what God says. They won’t listen. It’s as simple as that.

When that happens, we can be tempted to respond with anger and judgment. When others reject what God says, we think we’ve failed. Here’s the problem: We think it’s OUR job to change hearts. But it’s not. That’s God’s job.

God makes our rebellious, dead hearts alive. His Spirit breathes life into us, completely outside of our decision. Ephesian 2 tells us, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made alive with Christ even when we were dead in our sins.” Spiritual life is completely his doing! That’s God’s job.

What’s our job? It’s simple. Speak God’s Word. “Say to them, ‘This is with the Sovereign LORD says.’” With courage, kindness, gentleness, compassion, empathy, and patience, and most of all with love, we point to God and his Word. That’s our job.

The rest? That’s God’s job.
