Psalm 2 - The King On The Mountain
Psalm 2:6, “I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.”
We used to “roughhouse” with my dad, as my mom called it. My brothers and I would jump on his back, pin his arms and legs, and pile on. Just when we thought he was secure, he’d roar, break free, and tickle one of us. I now realize my dad probably wasn’t using all his strength…
A similar, sadder picture comes in Psalm 2. The nations conspire against God. They plot. They plan how to break the chains they think God has palced on them. What is God’s response? He laughs at their weak attempts, as an adult laughs at a child who boasts of their strength. What can man do against God? Nothing more than a toddler can do against an adult. Who actually controls everything in this universe?
“I have installed my king on Zion, my holy mountain.” Jesus rules. He reigns on Mount Zion, at the right hand of God the Father. He holds absolute power. He rules his kingdom with grace, truth, and love.
Our king died for our sins. His resurrection from the grave opened the gates to his kingdom. By his love we are made citizens of that holy city. His crown is thorns. His jewels are nail-marked hands and a pierced side. Our king’s rule means life and salvation for all who believe in his name.
