Psalm 4 - I Sleep In Peace

Psalm 4:8, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.”

I have seen plenty of different reactions to the message of Jesus Christ. Some laugh at the Bible as nonsense. Others acknowledge a god, just not the God of the Bible. Many take comfort in the pleasures of this world. Christians themselves doubt whether God can actually take care of us. Have you seen any of these? No doubt you have.

Psalm 4 shows us a similar picture. David, the author, sees people going their own separate ways. Some mock God; they seek delusions and false gods. Others doubt that God is in control. David, however, is confident in the LORD. He trusts that the LORD is good, all the time, even in distress and trouble. The LORD brings David salvation and loves David with an unfailing love.

You and I have the exact same comfort David had. No matter what the world around me does, I have the words of Psalm 4, “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, LORD, make me dwell in safety.” Troubles may come. Pain and problems might wash over me. But do you know what is constant? The unfailing love of our LORD. Jesus died for our sin. He rose to give us everlasting life. Now we have hope of eternal paradise. In that, I can sleep in peace.
