Theology 12: He Will Crush The Serpent’s Head (Xmas Eve)

He will crush the serpent’s head

Genesis 3:15, “And I will put enmity between you [the serpent] and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

The drama couldn’t get any better. The serpent, that ancient dragon, had destroyed God’s paradise. Sin spread across the world. All was lost.

Then God entered the stage and spoke a mighty promise: A Savior would come, born of a woman, to crush the serpent’s head and free humankind from sin. What joy! What hope!

But what do we see? A helpless baby. This is that serpent crusher, the dragon slayer? What a disappointment. The world has moved on from Jesus. What goodness and joy could a little infant possibly give?

Ancient words do not fail. God’s Word does not fall. This infant did what no one could imagine: He saved us. He crushed the serpent’s head.

Another name for that serpent is also “the accuser.” Each day, each time we sin, the serpent slithers into our heart and accuses us. “God won’t forgive you. No one loves you. You don’t measure up. You’re not enough.”

He will crush the serpent’s head. Jesus destroyed the devil’s work. He took away Satan’s power to accuse. How? The blood Jesus shed on the cross covers our sin. Every day we have forgiveness for our sins.

Family, food, friendship are all great. But this is what Christmas is about: Jesus, our Savior, is born! What joy!
