Theology 13: The 3-1 God
The 3-1 God
Matthew 28:19, “Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.”
Did you know the word “trinity” is not found anywhere in the Bible! It’s a Latin word that means “3-1”. Christians first used it around 200 AD to explain what the Bible teaches about God: God is 3, God is 1.
Does that make any sense? Of course not! Is Christianity nonsense? Of course not! You might object to that. “This god certainly seems like nonsense to me.” That’s fine. But you’ll miss the beauty. God is not nonsense but beyond human logic.
Does any of it ‘make sense’? Why would Jesus become a human? Why would Jesus die for our sins? Why would God send his only begotten Son to a world that rejects him? Why would God invite you to the wedding banquet again and again? Why would the Spirit create faith in our hearts? Why would the Spirit strengthen us after we fall, again and again?
Beyond all logic and reason, there is a God who loves you. We can’t comprehend him or understand him, but that doesn’t change who God is. The 3-1 God is our Father, who created all things and loves you personally. The 3-1 God is our brother Jesus, who died and rose to give forgiveness and life. The 3-1 God is the Spirit, who brings you into God’s family and strengthens you in God’s Word. Our 3-1 is incredible!
