Let God Speak #38: What Is Church All About?
Acts 2:21, “And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
What Is Church All About?
Everyone celebrates Easter and Christmas. Some realize these have Christian roots. Few know about the third great Christian “holiday”: Pentecost! This is the birth of the New Testament church, 50 days after Easter, when God sent his Spirit on the disciples to speak in real languages. Read Acts 2 for the full story!
Why did God give the disciples this gift of speaking languages? This wasn’t useless babbling; they were speaking real languages of real nations. The point couldn’t be clearer. God lit up a giant road sign for them: Go and tell the gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone!
We can get distracted. The Church isn’t PRIMARILY about helping people, comfortable tradition, or charity. Don’t get me wrong, those things are great! But they turn into idols when that’s a church’s primary mission.
God sent the Holy Spirit to the disciples so they could speak in real languages. He wanted them to go and tell all nations about the good news of Jesus: We have forgiveness of sins through his blood and the promise of the resurrection from the dead. God gives us faith, life, and salvation. What a gift!
The mission of the church is this: To tell people about Jesus, so everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
