Let God Speak #16: Terror and Joy

Luke 2:8-9, “And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified.”

Terror & Joy

Terror. Not something one usually feels on Christmas Eve. But when the glory of God appeared with angels it terrified the shepherds. Why? The light and music on a dark and quiet night certainly surprised them. But the angels were also holy and sinless, while the shepherds were horrible sinners. The presence of such holiness and glory would terrify any sinner.

You and I have reason to be terrified on Christmas Eve. That baby Jesus isn’t just a cute manger scene. He came because we sin. He was born because we deserve to suffer in hell for eternity.

But what does the angel say in response to our terror? “But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.”

You and I have reason for joy on Christmas Eve. A joy that silences all terror. A Savior has been born. Jesus. Because of him and through faith in him, our sins are forgiven. We are perfect in God’s eyes. We have the hope of eternal life. This is what Christmas is all about.
