Let God Speak #17: All Things For God’s Glory
1 Corinthians 10:31, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”
All Things For God’s Glory
Some Christians think certain actions are “more holy” and others are “less holy.” Holy: volunteer, sing in the choir, give money to church, work for the church, say “Jesus” in at least every third sentence. Less holy: talk about the Hawkeye game, work a 9-5 job, pay your taxes, watch TV at night.
Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians reveal a different picture. EVERYTHING we do is holy. The action itself doesn’t matter. A simple janitor does work just as holy as a pastor or priest. God doesn’t want a shoemaker who covers the shoes with crosses; he wants one who makes good quality shoes. Talking about the Hawkeyes game is just as holy as singing in the choir.
Why? It’s about the heart, Jesus says in Matthew 15:1-20. If the motivation for our work is Jesus’ love for us, if it’s compassion, mercy, and kindness, that work is holy. If the motivation is pride, laziness, envy, etc., that work is unholy. In this way even work done for church, even what a pastor or priest does, can be unholy in God’s eyes.
Whether we eat, drink, play, work, sing, serve, love, or live, we do all things for God’s glory, for the one who forgives ours sins and gives us eternal life. To God alone be glory.
