Let God Speak #37: For The Church

Ephesians 1:22, “And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church.”

For The Church

The Roman Empire once stretched for 1000s of miles. The city of Rome stood, grand and imposing. What is it like now? Nothing remains except rocks and ruins. 2000 years from now, what will Washington D.C. look like? Will ‘America’ even be in the history books? What will be left of our nation?

Do you want to know what history is really about? God’s people. Jesus rules everything ‘for the church,’ from the smallest leaf falling to the intricate politics of nations. Jesus directs all things for his people. It all revolves around us.

Wow, that’s a pretty arrogant thing to say.

Not quite. Jesus’ goal isn’t comfort and ease. He wants to bring people into his kingdom, to strengthen our faith. Jesus wants us to repent and turn to him. That might mean things don’t go so well! That might mean Jesus sends us problems with health, finances, family, etc. That might mean life is rough and hard.

Good. We can rest in peace. Jesus rules heaven and earth for his church. For you. Everything, even the tragedies, happens according to Jesus’ plan. What is that plan? To bring sinners into Jesus’ kingdom, to proclaim forgiveness of sins through Jesus’ blood, to announce the eternal paradise we have in Jesus’ name. Jesus’ kingdom of forgiveness and life sits at the center of history.
