Weekly Devotion: The Bread of Life
The Bread of Life
John 6:35, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believers in me will never be thirsty.”
Have you ever stuffed your face with food? We all have. Delicious Thanksgiving meals and family reunions are just a few opportunities for piles of amazing food.
Do we ever stuff our faces with the things of this world? It’s a common temptation for all of us! We run after money and possessions. We focus exclusively on our jobs or hobbies. We eat a diet of material ‘stuff’, and that’s all we really eat. We try to get our purpose and meaning, our ‘food’, from the things of this world.
What does that food give us? It might feed us for a little bit. But eventually, it runs out. Or it feeds us with disappoint, shame, fear, or a whole bunch of other rottenness. All the ‘stuff’ in this world can’t truly meet our hunger and thirst. Yet we keep eating.
What if there were better food?
There is. Jesus, the bread of life. When we “eat” him, or believe in him, we are fed and nourished. Not just for an afternoon, or a year, or a lifetime. We are fed for eternity. In Jesus, our sins are forgiven. Because of Jesus, God promises us resurrection from the dead and eternal life. In Jesus, our real hunger and thirst in life are met. Jesus is the Bread of Life.
