Weekly Devotion: Drawn to the Bread of Life

Drawn to the Bread of Life

John 6:44, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them, and I will raise them up at the last day.”

It’s easy to overestimate our strength, isn’t it? A tweaked back we try to shrug off becomes weeks or months of pain. We’re so sure a memory is correct, but everyone else disagrees. We put in long hours thinking we can manage it, but our heavy eyes and aching heads tell a different story.

It’s easy to overestimate our spiritual strength as well.

We look in a mirror and think, “I’m a pretty good person.” We imagine that we’re strong enough to find God or come to him on our own. Our American culture programs us to think a ‘can-do’ attitude applies to everything.

But Jesus couldn’t be more obvious. “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them.”

What comfort! We overestimate our strength all the time. We’re weak. We make mistakes. We fall down. There are so many ways to get hurt in this world. We can feel alone or abandoned.

But God is not weak. He holds us, guides us, and supports us. He never leaves us or abandons us. The almighty God is with us.

And the most amazing thing? He promises to raise us on the last day to life everlasting.

This God draws us in and holds us close.
