Weekly Devotion: Where is Happiness?
Where is happiness?
Haggai 1:9, “You expected much, but see, it turned out to be little. What you brought home, I blew away. Why?” declares the Lord Almighty. “Because of my house, which remains a ruin, while each of you is busy with your own house.”
Have you ever tried grabbing water? Really! Have you? It’s impossible. You could try 1,000 times, and it wouldn’t work. It slips through your fingers.
Finding happiness can be a lot like grabbing water.
We grab and grab and grab. We work at our jobs, spend time in our hobbies, go on vacations, make friends, get likes on social media, eat delicious food, stay up late, or exercise to look good. We amass all this “stuff.” But what happens? Happiness just slips through our fingers. We stare at our hands, at our lives, and ask, “Where did it go? Where is happiness?”
We expect much, but it turns out to be little. Why?
We’re looking in the wrong place. We’re drinking from the wrong pitcher. We’re grabbing the wrong solution.
We’re ignored Jesus. We’ve pushed him away.
What can Jesus give?
You are enough in his eyes. You are loved by him. You are the delight of his heart, the apple of his eyes. You are his prized possession. You are forgiven. You are chosen. You don’t need to prove yourself; he’s done it all. He gives eternal life. He creates peace in our hearts.
Jesus is happiness that will never go away.
