Let God Speak #21: I Want To Be Good

Romans 3:21-22, “But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness is given through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.”

I Want To Be Good

Most people don’t want to be the ‘bad guy.’ If a movie is written well, we see the tragic backstory of the villain and the unfortunate circumstances that changed them. It takes an outside point of view to show us our fault in many situations. People want to be good, liked, or respected. There is a certain delight in being congratulated, recognized, or honored, right?

But we just can’t shake off that feeling. We’re doing a lot, but it’s never quite enough. We are trying, but we could try harder. I achieved something, but they achieved more than I. Am I good enough? Am I liked enough? Do I have what it takes?

Yes. You are good. You are liked. You are enough. But this isn’t a motivational speech. That’s all true, but not because of you. If we ever think we’re ‘good enough’ on our own, there’s probably a good dose of hypocrisy in our hearts. No, you are ‘righteous’ (a word that means ‘good’) only through faith in Jesus. You are perfect in God’s eyes because Jesus lived a perfect life in your place. Through spirit-worked faith in Jesus, his righteous and good life covers you like snow covers the ground. Through Jesus, you are good.
