Let God Speak #22: Baptism: Adoption into the Family

Titus 3:4-7, “But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.”

Baptism: Adoption Into The Family

Adoption is underrated. Wouldn’t you agree? I would love to see adoption “advertised” more (am I allowed to speak like that?). A child. No family. Alone. Lost. Unloved. Suddenly, a family comes and says to that child, “We want you to join our family as our child, a son or daughter.” Cherished. Found. Loved. What a beautiful thing!

This is what happens when God saves us. We are adrift in sin, lost and alone in darkness. But not unloved. God sent his Son to die for us. We hear this goods news of forgiveness and eternal life through Jesus. God’s Spirit enters our hearts. We trust in him.

Nowhere is this adoption more obvious than baptism. With water and the Word, God washes our sins away. With water and the Word, the Spirit enters our hearts. With water and the Word, we become heirs of eternal life and children of God. What a beautiful thing!
